I am writing to let you know that I support the Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore MP's NSW Animal (Regulation of Sale) Bill 2008 and to ask that you support it in Parliament.

All sources of profitable sales of cats and dogs eg pet shops, Internet advertising and newspaper advertising are a big reason that there are so many animals in pounds and shelters. These sources for quick and easy purchase of cats and dogs typically encourage people to buy animals on impulse, without making sure they have the money or time to look after them properly for the length of their natural life. When the novelty wears off and the pet becomes a burden, many dump the animals at pounds, shelters and other rescue groups. There are not enough people adopting pets from these places, so 60,000 animals in good health are killed every year in NSW alone and an estimated 250,000 across Australia.

Many of these cute puppies and kittens are supplied by puppy and kitten 'farms or mills' and other unscrupulous or accidental backyard breeders who churn out huge numbers of animals with no thought as to their long term wellbeing. Their only interest is in the profit to be made.

Only registered and responsible breeders who limit their litters carefully and make sure that the animals they breed are healthy, along with animal shelters and rescue groups will be able to advertise the sale of pets under Clover Moore's Bill, so backyard breeders and farms or mills will not be able to use pet shops, newspapers and the Internet to sell their animals. And if there is no easy profit to be made, they will stop the senseless overbreeding.

Something needs to be done to stop animals being senselessly killed, and to make sure that people who want to get a pet will understand what it takes to care for it over it's natural lifespan. We want to see more done about the source of the problem – the chronic over-supply into a market that does not have the capacity to provide homes for all.

Separate and individual State animal welfare legislations make it very difficult to create meaningful change - there needs to be a co-ordinated approach. In NSW the public are calling for a full and formal government enquiry into the pet industry and the reasons why so many animals end up unwanted and destroyed. There also needs to be a full National enquiry as this terrible situation effects every Australian Community.

Please visit www.DEATHROWPETS.net for more information.

If you care about these animals you will support Clover Moore's Bill and the call for a full Parliamentary enquiry into the pet industry. Thank you.

Yours sincerely...
